Radio Antenna Frequency Tuners (RAFT)

Today's iconic phone designs are exceptionally slim and thin, which affords less room than ever for the antenna and related circuitry. Often, designers are forced to trade performance for style. Getting the most out of existing antenna designs is what Paratek is all about, using remarkable ParaScan-based Tunable Integrated Circuits (PTICs). PTICs have the ability to change capacitance upon a directed change in voltage. This means that RF circuit impedances can be dynamically and adaptively improved, making wireless handsets perform better than ever!

Using the PTICs, two types of RF-tunable solutions are possible: closed-loop and open-loop. A closed-loop design comprises an iterative sense and control feedback loop that adaptively tunes the circuit as needed. During normal everyday use, a mobile handset encounters numerous changes with respect to how it is held and stored. Each different 'use-case' can worsen the impedance match at the antenna. A closed-loop product like Paratek's Adaptive Impedance Matching Module (AIMM) continually seeks the optimal impedance match no matter the operating condition of the phone (slider/flip open or closed; handset held at the head or in a pocket).

The Radio Antenna Frequency Tuner (RAFT) is an open-loop solution, meaning that while it also works to improve the antenna impedance match it does so minus the sense and control features of AIMM. The straightforward benefit of RAFT is that it maximizes Total Radiated Power (TRP) and Total Isotropic Sensitivity (TIS) by optimizing antenna performance. For example, RAFT can be directed to change the capacitance of the PTICs if the flip is open, if voice is present in the earpiece, or when any number of specific situations have a change in state.

The areas highlighted in blue in the illustration below show typical insertion points for Paratek's RF tunable ICs, integrated within RAFT and AIMM. The PTICs are also very effective placed elsewhere in the front-end, as shown.

RAFT comprises a four-output HV-DAC (part number PTHV-01044) that sets and manages the bias voltages for four different PTICs.

Thanks to its proprietary doped BST material called ParaScan, Paratek is able to build tuning circuits--Passive Tunable ICs, or PTICs--that are exceptionally small while offering high Q and high linearity. Penta-band coverage is well within reach, even with highly miniaturized antenna tuners. GSM (850MHz and 900MHz); DCS (1800 MHz); PCS (1900 MHz); and UMTS (2200 MHz) can all be covered with a small antenna coupled with Paratek's frequency tuning products.

Thanks to its leadership position in adaptive RF tuning, Paratek can provide an entire tuning kit comprising tunable ICs and companion high-voltage ASIC controllers. RAFT and High Q antennas are ideally suited for the next generation of ultra-small, feature-rich, multi-band/ multi-mode mobile phones.

As demand increases for smaller and thinner mobile handsets, Paratek is there with the right RF tuning solutions!
