Paratek's new Adaptive Impedance Matching Module (AIMM™) is a completely new component that functions as a closed-loop tuner for wireless phones. Mobile phone antennas can 'de-tune' based on simple ergonomics and environmental conditions. For example, how the phone is held against the head can markedly impact the impedance match. Similarly, how the phone is stored (in a pocket or briefcase, for example) can negatively impact this match. AIMM™ compensates for these variables, which results in a dramatic increase in total radiated power (TRP), total isotropic sensitivity (TIS), link margin, PA linearity & efficiency, and antenna efficiency (gain). All this, combined with a reduction in
overall current consumption!
There are three main functional parts to AIMM. First, the ParaTune™ tunable ICs have the ability to change capacitance (and thus antenna impedance) upon a change in applied voltage (bias voltage). Second, Paratek's HV-DAC (PTHV-01044) provides the necessary bias voltages for the tunable ICs. It does this through the use of DACs that handle voltage-conversion and management. The third functional part of AIMM is the sense and control circuitry that defines the product as a closed-loop solution. Embededed algorithms continually monitor antenna impedance and instantly correct mismatches when they occur.
AIMM™ represents a breakthrough product for Paratek. Market acceptance of AIMM™ has been exceptionally strong, since the technology provides benefits for the entire wireless supply chain...from component makers and handset manufactures to the carriers themselves.
